CBC Points Table: How Many Points Is EE1, ME2, AE1 and BE2?

CBC points table for Kenya: marks, levels and points for EE1 to BE2, with worked examples and a way to stop calculating them by hand.

Searching "EE1 is how many points" usually means one thing: you have a mark sheet in front of you and need the number now. Here it is, then a few ways to stop doing this by hand.

The CBC points table

Level Sub-band Marks Points
Exceeding Expectations EE1 90 to 100 8
Exceeding Expectations EE2 75 to 89 7
Meeting Expectations ME1 58 to 74 6
Meeting Expectations ME2 41 to 57 5
Approaching Expectations AE1 31 to 40 4
Approaching Expectations AE2 21 to 30 3
Below Expectations BE1 11 to 20 2
Below Expectations BE2 1 to 10 1

For the meaning of each level and how it is used in assessment, see our full guide to the CBC grading system.

Worked examples

  • 92 marks in Mathematics is EE1, so 8 points.
  • 80 marks in English is EE2, so 7 points.
  • 63 marks in Integrated Science is ME1, so 6 points.
  • 45 marks in Kiswahili is ME2, so 5 points.
  • 28 marks in Social Studies is AE2, so 3 points.

Add the points across learning areas for a total. With nine learning areas, the maximum is 9 × 8 = 72 points.

Where hand calculation goes wrong

The bands are not equal widths, so mental rounding fails. Common slips:

  • Treating 74 as ME2 because it "feels high". It is still ME1.
  • Applying the old 10-mark steps (80 to 89, 70 to 79) that many teachers learned earlier.
  • Different teachers using slightly different cut-offs on the same exam.
  • Adding points wrongly across nine or more learning areas, for every learner in a class of 40 or more.

One wrong cut-off on a mark sheet becomes a parent calling on report day.

Let the system do it

When marks are entered into a school management system built for CBC, the level and points come from one table, every time. Teachers type the mark; the grade, points and report card follow. DiraSchool applies the EE1 to BE2 scale automatically and generates CBC report cards from the results, so nobody needs to keep this table taped to the staffroom wall.

You can try it with one class for free, using last term's marks, and compare the output with your own sheet. If anything differs, you have found an error worth knowing about.

Summary

  • EE1 = 8 points, EE2 = 7, ME1 = 6, ME2 = 5, AE1 = 4, AE2 = 3, BE1 = 2, BE2 = 1.
  • Find the band for the mark first; the points follow.
  • The maximum across nine learning areas is 72.
  • Automate the lookup so every teacher grades the same way.

Frequently asked questions

EE1 is how many points?

EE1 (90 to 100 marks) is worth 8 points, the highest on the eight-level CBC scale. EE2 is 7, ME1 is 6, ME2 is 5, AE1 is 4, AE2 is 3, BE1 is 2 and BE2 is 1.

How do I convert marks to CBC points?

Find the band the mark falls into, then read off its points. For example, 63 marks is ME1, which is 6 points; 28 marks is AE2, which is 3 points.

What is the maximum CBC points total?

It depends on the number of learning areas. With nine learning areas at 8 points each, the maximum is 72 points.

Can software calculate CBC points automatically?

Yes. A school management system with CBC grading applies the same mark-to-band table to every entry, so teachers type marks and the levels and points are filled in consistently.
